The rumor of other worlds

§ Exhibition / Mª José Castellví Gallery, 1997

The Rumor of Other Worlds is a piece created for the collective exhibition Para Goya, held at the María José Castellví gallery in Barcelona. It particularly highlights the process used in the portrait of the Aragonese painter, which proposes a conceptual interplay between traditional and contemporary chalcographic techniques. Starting from an authentic original print —the celebrated self-portrait with which Goya introduces his famous series Los Caprichos—, I produced an enlarged photocopy whose toner I subsequently transferred to paper using solvent and a wooden object that served as a printing press. The print used to obtain the xerox was taken from one of the copies of the Los Caprichos edition produced by the Calcografía Nacional during the Second Spanish Republic; a copy that, at the time, belonged to my family's collection.

The work further delves into the symbolic dimension associated with sensory perception and creativity. The frame is inscribed with a poem in Catalan that functions as the visionary’s motto and includes clear references to another print, perhaps the most famous and controversial of the series:

Looking inward
when darkness offers
glimmers to the beautiful dream
maker of monsters

On the other hand, challenging the portrait's prominence, a golden ear stands out, created from a mold of my own left auricle. This element, which in the original engraving remains hidden by the painter's hair, establishes a symbolic relationship with the traditional "golden eye" present in various cultures. It thus emphasizes that the dramatic deafness of historical figures such as Goya and Beethoven did not represent a limitation, but rather an opportunity to deepen their internal vision and, in the composer's case, to hear the unheard and offer it to the world.
