Labios de píxels escupen
botellas de baba y dígitos,
y orejas de cera descorchan
ánforas sin eco ni sombra.

Un volcán derrama su lava
de aullidos líquidos y azules
sin rozar el mar de banderas
que honran al loro desplumado
de un poeta analfabeto

–Dicen que apuñaló a un espejo,
y que al crujir la noche blanca
el poeta dio a probar
a los mendigos los añicos
de sus visiones más dañinas.

Ni tú ni él sabríais jamás
que la aventura de la luz
termina en los muros de un cráneo;
tampoco que el curso del río
no altera la sonrisa boba
de los gorilas disecados
o que el fulgor amarillento
de los teatros derruidos
entusiasma a los que abuchean
al acomodador sin ojos

y al actor que orina en escena
y pega fuego a su papel.

Estimado amigo:

Dear friend,

I write these words to you, now that you’re at last a part of the community of those willingly inhabiting this island of sand and dust, this island where survival is paid for by burning ships and ploughing loneliness and silence. Even so, our audacity will be nothing but an agitator, an angel that instills madness, a path not only leading us to helplessness and closure, but to the land of the viper, the weeds and the bramble. Don’t you think our audacity should be enough to generate in us a reaction against all epic, against all ancestry? All in all, both you and I are just as we are for having relapsed in speaking the banned language whithout an inoculated yes got to infect our saliva. Those are not things to smooth the way or decrease the noise the scorpion prints on the sand, even less so now, when happiness emanates from our own acceptance and no one governs our dandelion seed lightness. You, me and all the rest will be able to root in wastelands, but never hold on to the landscape that recognises and hails us, since water, fire, earth and air are one and the same, and any place is a good one for growing and dying. No one must be the owner of the seed that’s sown, harvested, ground, kneaded and baked in the infinite labyrinth curled in our bowl. Remembering it is as useful as having the full certainty that there is not, nor will be, a single chance for salvation for us, and that our only comfort will be knowing that no one can dispossess us of the ability to renounce all imposed identity. Because art is not art anymore if its maker is not willing to battle the insignificant oracles and the creditor paying for them. Now you must hurry, because the game is ending and there’s barely time for contrition, and soon, very soon salt will blind the snooper and the joker will be erased from History. And when that happens, be sure fear will corrode our lips and anoint our skin, and fire… fire… You know what I’m talking about, but it doesn’t matter, forget what you’ve just read and dream as long as you can.

Espaciotiempo ubicuo     y glorias vanas breves

Oberture (English translation)
Visiting the past? Listening to the captive voices in the insane space of the oleanders? Restoring the paradise that autumns broke? Going back to the gardens where the lily proclaimed an immutable principle? What the hell are you trying to achieve with this nonsense? Desecrating the sanctuary of an enigma? Building a bridge between the shores of oblivion? Repainting the faraway summers with the colours of that happy night, of that fertile night? The night a meteorite impacted on a flintstone I had just caressed? The night a gelatinous wind anointed us with its backlight? The night you told me what happened to your eye when it took refuge in a magnolia’s heartbeats and looked into its non-gaze? The night you confessed to me that the world that was offered to your senses could not be evoked with poetic language without your verses being exempt from leaving an aftertaste indebted to the poetry emerged in the period of l’entre deux guerres or composed while both conflicts set the world on fire, but also of the one that years before had lightened some minds with hellish flowers or the one that decades later would turn the poetry into the main subject of the poem? Do you remember that I said yes, that in spite of that influence perhaps there would come the day when your poems would end up working out, especially —I added— if from that moment on you had the courage to open the doors of your poetry, and not only with the purpose to mitigate the screeches during the process of fitting into its historical context, but rather as a way to air your poetic places, for my taste excessively dominated by the the brocade filigreed by the smell of withered roses, the subdued shadow of hollows and the roughness of sea rocks, but also the acrid breath of birds, the useless shining of chalices and the cheesy fatalism of sunsets, let’s not mention the remembrance of burning robes and mysteric rituals, orphic resonances and transcendentalist reminiscences, the demodé philosophy that your strolls among ruins and fossiles inspired or the weeping of those castaways who, like you, could only toil in the tesmpests of the soul? Or have you perhaps forgotten that, at the end of my enumeration, you, that in that moment could not read the background of my comment, told me, a bit outraged and without failing to observe how your double nudity was deformed in the convex world of my pupils:

—Then what would be left of the great poetry if, while we’re taking stuff away, we take also the flower’s amber and the memory’s flower, the perfume of lavender and the stink of peat, the bile and the honey holding the ends of love or the stench that, dissolved in slime, releases the ashes that were cedar before being ship.

I chose not to reply and avail myself to the ancestral silence that announced the talk of bodies. However, if I had known that night what I know now, perhaps I would have told you something like:

—And what if you end up revealing the key of our loving game, the illogical mechanism of my caresses or the laws governing the whisper that at the break of day your crawling lips will chisel on the waxed skin of my/your body, of your/my body, both dead in my mind, both alive in your memory.

In a TV show, one member of the public addresses one of the guests with these words:

—Mr. Espinolza, with false modesty you have just defined yourself as a very small fish hard to be trapped by fishnets. What is your opinion about the ways of new capitalism? Don’t you think that said system is worryingly intervening on the net, making it more and more closely woven with the purpose of finally making off with everything?

This Espinolza drinks a sip of water and says:

—Since I haven’t been at my best lately and consequently I feel totally unable to offer enlightening answers, let alone to produce lapidary propositions, I will answer to you with a battery of questions, namely: do the words capitalism, technology and control (and naturally what they designate as well) constitute a new, definitive and evil trinity? : was Orwell a mere detractor of Stalinism or a complete prophet? : will the so-called First World en up becoming a huge closed monastery packed with pleasing telemata, where the even smallest attempt of transgressing order will be punished with perpetual disconnection? : off or keeping on feeding the databases of insatiable technocontrol? : […]

Sueño tal vez no soñado © oriol espinal (yse #21)

WB: Immer Radikal, niemals Konsequent!

WB: ¡No me diga!

WB: ¿Ubicuo?

OE: Quién sabe.

Perhaps never dreamed dream (English translation)
With a book in my hands I go out early to my balcony. I observe that a layer of burning magma covers the sky and a cloak of ashes, the street. Without wondering I open the book. All its pages are white except for the last one, where I read the following:

(The scene takes place in a large arcaded square in whose centre the smoky remains of a bonfire are piled up. The objects that have not succumbed under the action of flamesare but fragments of vynil records, book pages, video tapes, faded photographs, etc. Around the stinky jumble three men hold a conversation. Their names: Walter Benjamin, Fernando Prats and Oriol Espinal)

WB: Immer Radikal, niemals Konsequent! // FP: My friend Espinal, be for once my traditore. // OE: Without the least intention to transmit in an inexact way the essential content of such a declaration of principles, I would say that Immer equals always, and niemals, never. // WB: I see you have taken Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers very seriously. // OE: It is one of my bedside books. // WB: A fitting choice. By the way, and going back to my sentence in German, did you know that the big shot who ordered to light the fire bragged about the same, even if taking the precaution of reverting the adverbs? // OE: And by the way didn’t he proclaim that cultural works must break free from their condition of cultual objects? // WB: Yes, and the paradox in all this is that, in defence of the cultual, so many cultures have burnt down… // OE: No less of a paradox is that not only what fire has destroyed is nothing, but the soul residing in these useless remains now resembles the idea of God: it is everywhere and nowhere. It flows like running water… // FP: Perhaps, and giving the paradox a new turn, eluding the inquisitors and feeding the code-deciphering machines until the…? //FP: was it necessary to say that in French? // WB: As much as asking in Spanish if Octavio Paz has already written that things die for names to live. // OE: Or if he will ever write that the fixity of words only lies in lead tablets or in paper books. // FP: Will we be able to stop fucking about so much fetish, be it surrounded or not by aura? / OE: I’m afraid that those who need to defend them as glamorous and rentable safes will be somewhat reluctant. // WB: What has become of the class struggle? // FP: In the city where I earn my living, Marx is but the name of a square. // WB: And me? What has become of me? // OE: Your mortal remains ended up in the Portbou common grave, and your symbolic gravestone, also in Portbou, has become a place of cult for a few… who are many. // WB: No way! Como esas mujeres aux chagrins bizarrres
de un poema amoroso de Paul Eluard,
para borrarme he pintado en mi rostro
lo que ves.

Siempre has sabido

quieres mirarme?

                                 Pronto me colaré

Question and answer for a new catechism (English translation)
What did Espinal tell himself after reading the premises/questions that Prats had just e-mailed him, and more accurately after having re-read the one asking about what kind of corner could irony claim in front of an overwhelmingly flat(tened)//flat(tenning) discoursive competence?

That the tone of the answer that such a premise/question requested could well be the same as Joyce chose for the penultimate chapter of Ulysses, and also that the irony, more than claiming, should rescue all flattened/flattener discourse within range, and that it should do that without finezza, as if crushing a paper sheet with its hands, and without any other purpose but getting the subject that was the object to the crushing to corrupt the flatness of its message and hold on to the fullness through the recently acquired anfractuosities, escarpments, declines, hills, valleys or mountains; geographical accidents that would allow the old discourse and its gestures (now turned into labyrinths of infinite points of view, into metropolis of ideas without owner, in towers of babel of arguments in constant de/reconstruction) to start walking without fearing new and more beneficial ironies.

Words and their universes (English translation)
How many words fit in one word? I’ve asked myself this afternoon, shortly after reading that admirable Borges’ story entitled The writing of the God. The question has driven me to write some reflexions about polysemy and the language universes which do not deserve to be reproduced. Later on, giving a new orientation to my discourse, I’ve told to myself in consolation that, if within my few virtues didn’t figure the capacity of formulating with only one word an infinite concentration of facts, things and concepts, I could talk about certain voices that could generate by themselves a greater profusion of associated ideas on my mind. How much or what fits, for example, in the word ‘nothing’?, I’ve written on my notebook before adding «For the moment, I would say that besides the anagrams ‘Adam’ (clay transmuted into flesh and conscience by the only god Yahweh Elohim) or ‘Dana’ (progenitor of Dagda, the Celts’ Good God), every term related to the origin preceding death, as well as the scenario where every sunrise and dusk have place. If on the contrary, I pronounce the word ‘rose’, Dante’s paradise, the erupting Vesuvio and the opened sex of Venus concatenate on my mind, but also the names of Coleridge, Wagner and Joyce; my grandfather’s name, who painted the most beautiful white rose of all ever painted, or the name of those others who are patrimony of the god who ripped himself out and visited the deserts where the plaster and sand roses (also the Jericó roses) don’t have, on the contrary of the Burt Norton ones, ‘the look of flowers that are looked at’. What would have been of the Rose without everything entailing the word ‘periphrasis’, a word which does not usually stimulates my memory, but every time I read it or listen to, it challenges me to invent phrases defining her, as, for example, the one I transcript next: Art which allows the poet to cause wonders as making the word ‘seed’ end up transformed in a lush tree where the voices designating it’s whole and the pieces configuring it reside. Actually, this art, as many others, has entered a decadence which is rushing it onto a not too difficult to guess outcome, since not the empire’s intelligence services, being decanted by the algorithms, use it to generate complex in-code languages, nor this world chroniclers and, lot less the poets, adventure themselves to write, as the Viking Egil Skallagrimsson, ‘the sword’s dew’ to refer to blood. Anyway, there will always be someone who bets for excess. I know of some scribbler (who’s actually determined to find a whole in the plot of some of my unfinished stories) who, I ignore if with the purpose of turning on his reader’s hilarity, likes to fall into verbal pyrotechnics such as ‘The mature fruit which twenty summers ago would be dislodged from the running soul’s shadow, idled from the fact that the tongue of the most beautiful of those who she had blinded with her artemisic glow, metamorphosed the air in petals of invisible velvet, and being posed this ones on to the portal of her niveous conch, they would flood with chaste tickling the twists and turns of her soft and excitable cavern’. All this to say that the deceased’s daughter had felt reassured listening to her fiancé’s words of comfort».

And you? Who damn are you?'. Who's Afraid of Rrose Sélavy?

Rrose speaks always in S. (English translation)
After a new creative block working day, I closed my notebook letting out a “What a shit day!” and went to bed without even giving goodnights to the cat. As I felt asleep, a woman, let’s say ambi-sexual, burst in my dream and said: “Because actually Monsieur Duchamp c’est moi. And you? Who damn are you?” I don’t know —I answered— and that, according to you (if it’s true who you state you are) would be the same as saying: “I don’t believe”. In fact, I don’t know neither why or what am I for, nor what am I and which is my place in this dream”. “Anyone who believes does not —the woman whispered— since only who, with extreme discretion, disbelieves me will be able to work the immeasurable field I gave men. I want you to be the new insolence missionary, the one restoring my kingdom before ideas are extinct from words and these only do to give sensed nonsense condolences to the rejected bachelors”. “But you never wanted to have disciples” I said, giving no credit to what I was listening. “My only wish at this moment —the woman said— is you act to resolve my delayed will. Take note on your mind what I’m going to say and actualize it to the extent it is a physically contra-aesthetical flam. 1) Acte d’honneur: To make the sun embracing the pleasure retinal organs visible in the no-vision (you’d better entrust yourself to St. Lucía) 2) Acte d’humour: Desdalinize that girl’s moustache whose name sounds as an expensive bitch (you must do it yourself: barbers who long for a place in history are not allowed) 3) Acte d’amour: Search for the first version of ‘Roue de byciclette’ (in this case, make yourself sure of the collaboration of a good bloodhound) If you finally came across with it, set fire the stool and fix the wheel over a marble cube, where you should write in lipstick (better rouge to rose) the phrase Who’s afraid of Rrose Sélavy? over its visible faces. Then, install the piece of work at 68 Rue du Vice, Rouen”. Humoring her, I asked if I should do anything in relation to the Philadelphia exhibitionist. “Naturally —she answered— that would be your tour de force. Look for a male (so much better if he is handsome) willing to please her through a lifetime. The one who kicked up the real world fuss, already said it was no good for a woman to be alone, much l…“ Suddenly, a voice in the dark intervened the conversation saying: “And didn’t she say, by the way, It was not expectable for the verbal diarrhoea to take over the paragraphs? Perceiving my puzzlement, with a kind old lady’s voice, the woman said: “Don’t be afraid son, its Ferdinand Dupré, the And however’s editor. His anger (apparent and meta-ironic) will drop down when we take hold of the silence illuminating the castle of the pure ideas, nevertheless…
